Midterm Review
1. Give an example of the woman question and/or a
figure who represents the New Woman in Ibsen, Strindberg, and
Bernstein.
2. In what ways are women economically dependent on
men in Ibsen, Strindberg, Bernstein, and Wilde?
3. What is the role of the (wet) nurse in Ibsen,
Strindberg, Bernstein, and Wilde?
4. How do men’s professional career choices carry
over into their family lives? For example, how does the Captain behave
like a captain at home, or how do any of the family men (in Wilde’s
case, deceased and potential) behave when they are not in public?
5. What is modern about the plays we have read so
far? How do the characters in each play define what it means to be
modern? Which play is best suited for production in theaters today—and
why?
