| LCMS STUDENT DATA ANALYSIS |
| 1. A “TIC” or Total Ion Chromatogram is automatically
displayed on the screen at the end of a run. If you need a hard copy,
click on “print.” Why: The TIC is a cumulative record of everything that was detected in the mass spec. The TIC will not provide you with individual mass abundances and is not quantitative data. In addition to the TIC shown in blue, a second trace will show the output of the Diode Array Detector (or DAD) in red. In theory the two traces will show the same number of peaks but at different heights. This is because the two detection methods respond differently to the same analytes. Remember also that the two traces will be slightly offset since the analytes travel through the DAD a few seconds before reaching the mass spec. 2. From the top menu select View and then Data Analysis. 3. Select the fifth icon from the left, (undulating blue line with white arrow.) Why: Using the mouse you can now select the mass spectrum of any point on the TIC. 4. To print the spectrum, click on the top bar (it will turn blue) then select File from the menu bar, then Print, and finally Print Selected Window. 5. Sign and date the printout. |
