The seminal work on Nepalese cities (in the Kathmandu Valley), carried by a team of architects and Indologists since the late Sixties, is:

ALSO:

Three important studies of Banaras:

Jonathan Parry, _Death in Banaras_

Sandria Freitag, ed., _Culture and Power in Banaras_

Lawrence Cohen, "Holi in Banaras and the _Mahaland_ of Modernity"

I should also add that some of the most interesting work being produced in connection with my own particular interest, the religious production or organization of urban space in contemporary India, takes up Muslim and Buddhist examples. As companion pieces to Smriti Srinivas's terrific book on Bangalore I would recommend Nicolas Jaoul and Gary Tartakov on Ambedkar parks and statues in urban North India and Mrinalini Rajagopalan on Islamic architecture in Delhi.
