Chomsky Talk on US Imperialism Since WWII (emphasis on Vietnam) Please listen to, and make careful notes on, Noam Chomsky's 1985 talk in Boston on US imperialism since WWII, with emphasis on the Vietnam War. It is on Streaming Audio, in three parts. Part 1; Part 2; Part 3. You will need a login and a password to listen to this lecture. Email me to get them (as long as you are registered in this class). Remember -- CASE is important. Use lower case in both login and password. Please do not give this login and password information to anyone else -- this material may be copyrighted (though I doubt it). Please write on Chomsky's interpretation of American ruling-class imperialist actions since World War 2. We are going to spend two days discussing these topics, with the help of this long talk by Chomsky. Therefore, I would like you to do this assignment in two parts. Do the first part for Friday. Do the next part for next Tuesday. Be sure to discuss: * the Greek Civil War (1947 ff.); * the overthrow of the Arbenz government in Guatemala, 1954; * the invasion of Grenada, 1982; * US support for fascist governments and death squads in El Salvador; * the US war against Nicaragua in the 1980s and support of the 'Contras.' * Of course, the Vietnam War. Explain how Chomsky sees all these events as related. But also discuss the particularities of each. I would like you to do this assignment in two parts. Do the first part for Friday. Do the next part for next Tuesday. You don't have to discuss all these events in one assignment. Discuss some in one assignment, the rest in the other. NOTE: IN YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT, BE SURE TO CAREFULLY EXPLAIN HOW CHOMSKY INTERPRETS THE US COLD-WAR CONCEPT OF "INTERNAL AGGRESSION", AS A KEY CONCEPT IN UNDERSTANDING US MOTIVES IN THE POST-WAR ERA. Be as specific as possible in each assignment. Each assignment should be 300 words in length. Email to your group and to me.
