Gulf War, Iraq, and American Lies

First, read the transcript of U.S. Ambassador Glaspie's interview with Saddam Hussein of Iraq one week before Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. Pay closest attention to the highlighted text, but read the whole thing.

For this assignment you should do at least two separate Google searches.

Go to the Google Search Engines (one of the most popular sites on the Web). Do at least the following two searches:

"Gulf War" lies "public relations"

and

Iraq Bush lies

, where the "box" above represents the Search Box on Google's main page. You need to put quotation marks around phrases, such as "Gulf War" and "public relations".

You might also want to try some other searches, like "Gulf War" "Hill and Knowlton", "Gulf War" Wanniski, and so on.

In the case of each search, look through the pages that seem to be the most relevant to our topic -- U.S. government use of lies and propaganda to build popular support for its foreign policy or at least to discourage opposition.

Write 300 words drawing your conclusions about the use of lies and propaganda on the Iraq question by the U.S. Email to me and to your group.

Print out the Glaspie-Hussein transcript, and at least two other pages you have found -- the most useful ones, those you used in your assignment. Bring them to class.
