Assignment on Gabriel Kolko, "The War and Rural Vietnam"; Young, Chapters 1&2

Note that you have two separate readings, and two assignments, due for today.

Read this chapter (from Kolko's book Anatomy of a War, 1985) very carefully. Print it out. Bring it to class with you. This is very important -- we will be discussing it in detail.

Then, write 200 words (or a bit more, but not less) about the questions of land and class in the Vietnam War. How does Kolko's chapter accord with the testimony of Ralph McGehee?

Read chapters one and two of Young's book carefully. Your writing assignment is on the second half of Chapter Two.

Reread, carefully, the account on pp. 29-36 of France's "Vietnam War," from 1946 to 1954. Note that this wa, in effect, just as long as the U.S.'s "Vietnam War", -- large numbers of US troops were in combat from 1965 through 1973.

Pick two specific passages in these pages that seem especially significant to you, and especially helpful in understanding the U.S. war later on.

Write 200 words (or a bit more, but not less)
