Malory, Le Morte dArthur - First Assignment

This is a very long work, three full volumes in the scholarly edition by Eugene Vinaver.

(We have this three-volume work in Sprague Library:  PR2041.V5 1967 )

Except by specialists, it is always studied by selected sections. We will only consider a very brief but good selection.

You should read the little that's known about the author, whose identity is not certain. Even if it were, it would give us only indirect and, perhaps, not very important insight into the work itself.

First reading assignment:

• Read the Wikipedia articles on Thomas Malory and on his work Le Morte dArthur.
  This latter article will give you an overview of the whole -- all the parts.

  • Caxton's Preface (330); Caxton's Colophon (334);
  • "From the Marriage of King Uther to King Arthur" (31-43);
  • "A Noble Tale of Sir Launcelot du Lake" (44-78).

Written Assignment: Malory's work was valued for its morality.

Write 350 words or a bit more on the tradtional Chritian - moral elements in the two sections of LMdA we are reading for today (31-78). Identify them by page. Find a least six examples of them.
