Assignment on Edmund Spenser, "Epithalamion"

Read this poem very carefully, all the way through.

This poem is divided into 24 stanzas (why?). Each group should take 5 stanzas, except Group 5, which will take 4: Group One: Stanzas 1-5; Group 2: Stanzas 6-10; Group 3: Stanzas 11-15; Group 4: Stanzas 16-20; Group 5: Stanzas 21-24.

Study these stanzas once again, with special care. Then, do the following two things:

1. Write a careful paraphrase of the five (or four) stanzas. Do not leave anything out!

2. Write a careful explication of any one of those stanzas. Discuss which one among those in your group, so that each person in your group writes about a different stanza. (If there are 5 stanzas and 6 in your group, or 4 stanzas / 5 or 6 in your group, then one or two duplicates are allowed. But the object is to have every stanza explicated.

What's an explication? An "analysis or interpretation, esp of a literary passage or work or philosophical doctrine" (World English Dictionary).

Minimum length for all this: 300 words. You may have to write considerably more than 300 words. If you must write more to complete the assignment, then do so.

Email to me and to your group.
