Assignment on Selected Sonnets of Shakespeare

Read them all, of course.

Here is a web page with ALL of Shakespeare's sonnets, including many not in our textbook. Please use this page, when you can't find one of them in our textbook.

Some of the most famous of those in this anthology are 18; 30; 73; 116; 130. Be sure to study these five carefully!

Pick three sonnets, each from a different group below:

• First 17 Sonnets;
• Sonnet 18; Sonnet 20; Sonnet 105;
• The others -- 19; 23-98; 106-117;
• Sonnets 127-152 (The “Dark Lady” Sonnets).

You assignment:

1. Write out a paraphrase or "translation" into modern English of each of the three sonnets you have chosen.
2. Make sure that no one else in your group writes about any of the sonnets YOU have chosen.

This means you will have to email each other. The first person in each group who emails all the others in their group with his/her choices, gets those choices!
