Final Examination and Grading Information  - Prof. Furr's Classes

(last revision for Fall 2005 -- 12.13.05)

(NOTE: This information will also be posted as a link on the Home Page of our course)

Dear Students:

The Final Exam will be held during the time scheduled in the Examination Schedule, printed in the Course Schedule Booklet for this semester.

You’ll do the exam by email, just like all the other assignments for this class.

I will email you all the exam 15 minutes before the scheduled beginning of the exam period, just to make sure you get it on time. You will then have until the end of the exam period, as stated on the Exam Schedule, to email it back to me at my usual email address.

I will email the Final Exam to the email addresses you gave me as the first HW assignment of the semester.

IF you want me to send your Final Exam to a different email address as well, send me an email from that email address with the subject line

Subj: Lastname Class (WL, VN, MEL, etc.) Final Exam Address

Do this at least 48 hours before the Final Exam is to be sent out.

Please send me all the examination questions in ONE email. Do not send multiple emails.

You will have four (4) essay questions, with some choice. But each question will require you to answer on more than one work we have studied during the semester. So you must review everything we’ve studied. Use the HW assignments as a guide, but do not limit yourselves to just what was asked on the HW assignments.

You will need access to an Internet-capable computer. You can use a laptop with wireless connection; a computer lab computer; or you home or dorm room computer. You can – with enough advanced notice – borrow a wireless-capable laptop from the Non-Print Media division at Sprague Library (basement).

Whatever you do, it is YOUR responsibility to have access to a computer at exam time. Make arrangements to bring, borrow, etc., a computer right away.

The Exam

I advise you to spend ½ the time you have for each question – i.e. 15-17 minutes at least – outlining and planning your answer, on a separate piece of paper which you should bring for the purpose. A well-planned answer, carefully thought out, carefully spell- and grammar-checked, is much better than 30 minutes of solid writing.

Write your exam on a Word Processor. You have much greater control over the text with a full-fledged Word Processing program. Spell- and grammar-check it. Format it single-spaced, plain text only, blank line between paragraphs.

Number your answers according to the question asked. That way, I’ll know.

Do not email me back the exam late. You must finish on time, just as though you were in an exam room.

Final Grade

The Bi-weekly assignments will count for at least 50% of the final grade. They show persistence, consistency, and steady work. I will drop the lowest two grades of the Biweekly Assignments to get the average.

The Short Papers (if applicable in your class) are about 25% of your grade. I will drop the lowest one grade for the Short Papers. (If your class had no short papers, or only one of them, this does not apply to that class).

The Final Exam will count about 20%-25%, depending on the class.

The Mid-Term will count for 4 Biweekly Assigments, for those who chose to take it.

The Research Paper, for those classes that have one, will count for about 20% of the final grade.

Unexcused Absences may detract from your Final Grade.

Good luck! (Though, if you study hard and follow the directions above, you will not need any "luck")

Sincerely,

Grover Furr
