Study carefully the section "Beowulf Between Old and Modern English", pp. 36-43 in the Broadview, 2nd edition.
Listen to this 72-second selection of a reading of some lines of Beowulf in the original Old English.
Or, listen to a few of these short readings, from the first lines of Beowulf.
Read the Introductory material to Beowulf on pp. 11-18 carefully.
Make sure you are familiar with the helpful information on pp. 145-151. You don't have to memorize all this stuff. You have to know where it is, so you can consult it when the names in the poem become confusing.
Now, for the written assignment:
Read up to line 1650, the end of Section XXIII.
Look for Christian elements. Make a list of them -- anything that appears "Christian" to you.
Write 300-350 words about the use of these Christian elements. Email to me and to your group.
