The Many-Headed Hydra, Chapter 8 -- Second Assignment

Download and read two primary sources referred to by Linebaugh and Rediker in this chapter: Thomas Spence's The Marine Republic (1794), and James Kelly, "The Whiteboys in 1762: A Contemporary Account".

Read about Gabriel's Revolt, in Virginia, in 1800, from these two sources:

• Excerpts from Herbert Aptheker, American Negro Slave Revolts.
• This article by reporter Susan DeFord in The Washington Post, February 6, 2000, entitled "How did those icons of liberty, James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson, reward this man who risked all to battle tyranny in the name of freedom? They hanged him."

Finally, using Wikipedia, find some good informative pages on at least three of the other important incidents discussed in this chapter. Write 300 words on these passages, summarizing and discussing them, and email to me and to your group.
