Homework Assignment on Edward Bernays, Propaganda (1928), Chapter One

Before reading these two selections, read the Wikipedia page on Bernays.

You may want to read the page -- a single paragraph, really -- on Bernays' book Propaganda and on the documentary "The Century of Self", about the Public Relations industsry.

Bernays’ chapter is from his book titled Propaganda. Lee’s chapter recommends the use of the word "propaganda" on the last three pages.

Now study this reading carefully. Note especially the first two paragraphs, and the last. These passages are marked with a box. Other parts have been underlined to help you.

Bernays makes the claim that there are “those who manipulate” or serve as “invisible governors” in our society. What does he mean when he says this? And what does this suggest about our ability [as individuals as well as within groups in society] to make our own decisions and/or effect public policy?

Discuss the above in about 250 words. Then in another +/- 100 words, discuss what all this means in relation to propaganda and the flow of information in our world today.
