Please read carefully  Dee Brown, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, Chapter 7.

Read the Wikipedia article on the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864. This massacre immediately preceded the events related in Chapter 7.

Notice, for example, that the US government marker at the site of the Sand Creek Massacre refers to it as "The Sand Creek Battle". What's the difference between a "massacre" and a "battle"?

Think carefully about the issues this raises: invasion; imperialism; freedom; self-defense; racism; and other issues.

Then, please write 300-400 words  the US government's treatment of the American Plains Indians.

• The massacre during which Black Kettle and many other Cheyennes were killed is called the "Battle of Washita River". It is described on pp. 168-9 of Chapter 7 of Brown's book.
• The last encounter related in this chapter, on pp. 172-174, is known today as "The Battle of Summit Springs." Why not read this article too? Notice the casualties in this "battle", in the final paragraph.
