Read, and then study Lerer's Chapter 6 carefully.

Take special note of the dialectical differences Lerer notes on pp. 90; 94; 95-97.

Written Assignment: Identify the dialectical identifying characteristics in the three texts Lerer presents in this chapter:

• John of Trevisa's introduction to his translation of Ranulf Higden's Polychronicon, p. 88;
• Short passages from Geoffrey Chaucer's "Reeve's Tale", pp. 93-4;
• Dan Michel's Agenbyte of Inwit, including the Lord's Prayer in the Kentish dialect of Middle English, p. 97

Write about 300 words. Be prepared to discuss this material in class.
