Homework Assignment on Lerer, Chapters 8 - 10

Please read and study Lerer's Chapters 8 through 10.

Please pay special attention to Chapter 8: "Chancery, Caxton, and the Making of English Prose." Modern English, spelling, grammar, and syntax, owe more to the Chancery English of the 15th century than to any other single source.

Note down all the characteristics of Chancery English that Lerer points out. Note especially the word order S-O-V, Subject-Object-Verb, unlike Modern English (S-V-O) but similar to many other languages, particularly German.

Written Assignment: Study carefully the text on pp. 122-3, the letter of Isabell Boteler of Lancashire petitioning Parliament against William Pulle, written in 1437.

Note down the characteristics of this text in which it differs from Modern English (for example, note the instances of SVO word order).

Write about 300 words. Email to me, not to your group.
