This is a very fundamental chapter. You really do have to learn what is in it.
Concentrate on the boldface words first. Go over and over it. Read the chapter 4-5 times. It's not long.
Study this chapter carefully. Sections 1 and 2 are historical, descriptive, and important.
You must learn the symbols in the simplified Phonetic Alphabet in Section 3, p. 20.
Study Section 4, "Phonetics and Sound Change" (21-26) very carefully! You will use this information for the rest of this course and, in fact, for the rest of your career.
Study Section 5, "Some Grammatical Terminology" (26-30) carefully.
Homework assignment:
Do questions 4 through 9 on pp. 31-32. Do them ALL. Carefully!
Please, do NOT look up the answers (yes, they are in the book). That is not going to help you at all. This is not a "test" but an exercise to give you practice.
Please email to me. NOT to your group. They have to work on it themselves.
In class you will discuss those parts of the chapter that you find the most puzzling, "hardest",
Finally, please consider this limerick:
The lifeboat that's kept at Torquay
Is intended to float in the suay:
The crew and the coxswain
Are sturdy as oxswain,
And as smart and as brave as can buay.
NB: As always, bring your text to class with you.
