Van Gelderen's Chapter 5 deals with the direct, external influences of other languages on Old and Middle English -- the influences of other languages.
Read and study all the sections: Celtic; Latin; Scandinavian; (Danish, Norwegian); French, after 1066; Dutch and Flemish; and the final two sections.
Drout's Lecture 11 covers much of the same ground but only the influence of French. (For the influences of Latin, Celtic, and Scandinavian see Lecture 10).
Study Drout's Lecture 11. You will find it helpful to read Lecture 10 as well.
Written Homework: Van Gelderen, Questions 1-3, p. 113; Drout, Questions 1 and 2, p. 86.
Write up your answers.
We will discuss this in class.
As always, remember that your HW is not a test! It's an exercise to help you understand and learn the contents of the chapter. So please, do not look for the answers!
