For this assignment we will work through the first three sections of Van Gelderen's long but very important chapter on Middle English.
Next week we'll review it and do some more exercises.
First, take note of Van Gelderen's chapter summaries: at the beginning of the chapter, p. 111; Section 7, "Conclusion", at the end on p. 138; and the "Keywords" on p. 139. This will help you to organize your study of this chapter.
There are six sections in this chapter (excluding the short "Conclusion" noted above).
1. Texts and Spelling, pp. 115 - 121;
2. Middle English Sounds, pp. 121 - 125;
3. Middle English Morphology, pp. 125 - 131;
4. Middle English Syntax, pp. 131 - 138;
5. Middle English Word Formation, pp. 139 - 140;
6. Middle English Dialects, pp. 140 - 144..
Written Homework. There are two parts to this assignment.
1. Make a detailed outline of Sections 1-3 of this chapter, pp. 115 - 131. Just follow Van Gelderen's presentation carefully.
This assignment is for me -- you will email it to me. But it is mainly for you. It will be your notes for study.
2. Do exercises 1 through 5 on pp. 145 - 147. Little actual writing is involved here; the challenge is to think these problems through and find the answers in the text of Chapter 6 if you don't remember them.
Send me TWO SEPARATE EMAILS, one containing your outline, the second, the 5 exercizes.
