Homework Assignment on Van Gelderen, Chapter 6: Middle English: 1150 - 1500, Part 2

For this assignment we will work through the rest of Van Gelderen's long but very important chapter on Middle English.

Last week we studied sections 1-3 and did some exercises. This week we will concentrate on sections 4-6 and do some more exercises.

As you did last week, first take note of Van Gelderen's chapter summaries: at the beginning of the chapter, p. 115; Section 7, "Conclusion", at the end on p. 144; and the "Keywords" on p. 145. This will help you to organize your study of this chapter.

To repeat: there are six sections in this chapter (excluding the short "Conclusion" noted above).

1. Texts and Spelling, pp. 115 - 121;

2. Middle English Sounds, pp. 121 - 125;

3. Middle English Morphology, pp. 125 - 131;

4. Middle English Syntax, pp. 131 - 138;

5. Middle English Word Formation, pp. 139 - 140;

6. Middle English Dialects, pp. 140 - 144.

Written Homework. There are two parts to this assignment.

1. Make a detailed outline of Sections 4-6 of this chapter, pp. 131 - 144. Follow Van Gelderen's well-planned presentation carefully.

Remember, although this assignment is for me -- you will email it to me -- it is mainly for you. It will be your notes for study.

2. Do four of the exercises 4 through 13 on p. 147. Group 1: do exercises 6 & 7 and any 2 others; Group 2: exercises 8 & 9 and any 2 others; Group 3, 10 & 11 and any 2 others; Group 4: 12 & 13 and any 2 others; Group 5 - 4 & 5 and any two others; Group 6 - choose any of the assignments for Groups 1 through 5.

Please be sure you have done a total of four of the exercises -- the two specifically assigned to your group, along with two others of your own choosing.

Once again, the challenge is to think these problems through and find the answers in the text of Chapter 6 if you don't remember them.

Your group will briefly present these exercises to the rest of the class.

3. We will try hard to discuss these texts in class. Therefore, carefully read through ONE of the following 4 appendices: Group 1: Appendix F, pp. 158; Group 2: Appendix C, but only the part on pp. 154 - 155; Group 3: Appendix C, the part on pp. 151 - 152; Group 4:   Appendix B, p. 143 to line 30 on p. 149.

Send me TWO SEPARATE EMAILS, one containing your outline, the second, the 5 exercises.

Use the following form for your Subject Lines:

Email to me. NOT to your group.

NB: As always, bring your text to class with you.
