The whole point of this Optional Mid-Term is to raise your grade. If you don't get an A or, at least, a B, you will not bring your grade up. Therefore, put in a lot of work to do a great job.
Download the whole of Will Irwin's 1911 study, "The American Newspaper." It is on our FTP server. The title is Irwin, Will, The American Newspaper. Collier's, Ja-Jl 1911.pdf
Do not confuse it with the file that contains only chapters 9 through 12, which is a HW assignment.
Print this out. Read ALL of it, several times.
Then do the following:
Make notes on each and every chapter.
Be sure to note the major examples Irwin gives, and what they are examples of.
Make sure these notes are neatly typed.
You should have 10-20 paragraphs of notes for each chapter.
Write a book review of 2500-3000 words.
For a sample of what a book review should look at, study several of the reviews from the JHISTORY list. Some are listed here . And there is an interesting one here.
Be sure that the reader of your review (me) can tell that you have carefully read and studied the whole work.
That means you must have at least one, and preferably more than one, paragraph outlining each chapter.
Spell-check and grammar-check -- i.e. proofread -- carefully.
Email BOTH your notes AND the book review to me in the normal format (see link on Home Page).
Deadline: Friday, March 29 at 11:59 p.m.
