Upton Sinclairs book The Brass Check was the most famous book of journalism criticism ever produced in the United States until the 1930s and George Seldes works (which we will also dip into). Even today it remains one of the major works of journalism criticism in the US.
For your HW assignment, please use and print out the text here . This is an image-PDF of the 1936 edition of The Brass Check, the only edition with an index.
Length: 500 words, but the main thing is this: Make it thoughtful, analytical, intelligent. Use examples from the chapters.
Email it to me and to your group.
You can now download this whole book here, in PDF format, or here, in TEXT format. But note: do NOT use this edition for your HW. Use the text linked above. I've put it online here because this is one of the great works of journalism criticism of the past century -- and it's free. To maneuver around in it, use the Adobe Acrobat "search" facility. For example, to find Chapter 35, put CHAPTER XXXV into the "search" box (the little magnifying glass). Or, if you know the page number, you can use Ctrl-N to "go" to page 195. HOWEVER, we will only read Chapters 4 (IV) through 7 (VII) and Chapter 35 (XXXV) for this class. |
