Assignment on Tuchman, "Web of Facticity"; Sigal, "Sources Make the News"

Study carefully both of these essays.

Even-numbered groups: write an outline of Tuchman. Odd-numbered groups: write an outline of Sigal. Outlines should be at least 300 words in length, but may be more.

Begin your outline by completing the following sentence: "In this article Tuchman (or, Sigal) is trying to prove that..." Don't forget the word "that." This is the thesis statement of the article. It will guide your outline.

Cite examples, with page numbers, in your summary.

For in-class discussion, be prepared to outline and discuss points of similarity and difference, including not only disagreement, but differences of emphasis, between the two articles. This means that you will not be writing on "the other" article, but you must study it carefully nonetheless.

Bring both articles, plus your own assignment, to class with you.

Email your assignment to me and to your group.
