Read Benito Cereno very carefully. Make notes as you read.
Now, concentrate on the narrator, Amasa Delano. Why is he so fooled by the situation on the "San Dominick"? What is there about the way Capt. Delano thinks of himself -- his values -- that leads him to misunderstand the situation, when there are so many hints and clues that might have revealed it to him almost at once?
Pick four sentences in Benito Cereno in which essential aspects of Capt. Delano's personality/character are revealed -- those aspects which lead him to misunderstand what is occurring on board the "San Dominick".
Make sure your four sentences are from different paragraphs, and from different parts of the book. That is, they should not all be from one part of the novel -- for example, not all from the first part of it. One point of this assignment is to give you a chance to show that you have, in fact, read and carefully studied the whole book.
Identify your sentences by the page number (upper left-hand corner of the PDF files) first 5 words of the paragraph in which each sentence occurs, so we can all find them regardless of which text we use.
Write 300 words about what in his personality or character leads Delano to misunderstand what is happening.
