Conan Doyle, Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: "The Musgrave Ritual"

Before studying "The Musgrave Ritual," we need to examine some details in "Silver Blaze" that we should have already looked into but -- probably -- neglected.

* Please find the solution for Holmes' calculation of the speed of the train he and Dr. Watson are on (p. 2)

* Find Tavistock on a map. You may use Google Maps, Mapquest, etc. To answer the question, use the URL of the Wikipedia page.

* Find a description with a picture of: frock-coat; gaiters; landau (a type of carriage); a drag (a type of carriage); a vesta; a sovereign; a guinea (these last two are forms of British money); furze-bush;

* What is a milliner?

Now, to "The Musgrave Ritual." Study this famous story very carefully. Pay close attention to all the details.

Write 150-200  words discussing this theme:

• Holmes' process of deduction;

And 150-200 words discussing one of the following themes, depending on your group:

1. attitudes towards science in this story (odd-numbered groups).
2. Holmes' attitude towards the British nobility / upper classes and the depiction of British society (even-numbered groups).
