Historicizing The Valley of Fear, I: The 'Scowrers'

After you have carefully read The Valley of Fear, carefully read this selection about the "Molly Maguires." It is from a well-known labor history from the mid-1950s, Labor's Untold Story, by Richard O. Boyer and Herbert Morais.

Study it carefully. Compare it to John Douglas' story of "The Scowrers", which he hands to Holmes half-way through Conan Doyle's short novel.

Write 300 words on the similarities between the organization known as "the Scowrers" in The Valley of Fear and the Workingmen's Benevolent Association and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in the account from Labor's Untold Story. Email to your group and to me.
