The Internet for English Majors Mr. Furr Homework Assignment
for Friday, September 11
Dear Students:
Dear Students:
My car broke down yesterday afternoon. As it was Labor Day, I had
to wait until today to arrange to have it towed from the parking lot
where I had to leave it to a garage, since the garage I use is closed
and its yard chained off. The parking lot manager told me I had to
arrange to have the car towed this morning. Therefore, I have to miss
class today.
Since we have only two classes a week, we can't afford to miss an
entire day of classes. Therefore, I am giving you the same assignment
that I would give you if I were present in class today. You are
responsible for it for Friday.
NOTE: IF YOU HAVE NOT YET EMAILED ME A MESSAGE, IN ORDER TO GIVE
ME YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, DO SO IMMEDIATELY. My email address is
furrg@alpha.montclair.edu.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY EMAILED ME, OR DO SO BY THE END OF TODAY,
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, I WILL COUNT YOU AS "PRESENT" FOR TODAY'S CLASS.
If you don't, I'll count you as "absent."
1. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SENT ME AN EMAIL. If you've already done
this, fine. You will find this assignment -- the same one you are
reading -- in your 'New Mail" or "Inbox" folder, since I've mailed it
to you. If you haven't sent me an email yet -- for example, if you
were not in class last Friday, September 4 -- send me one. If you do
not have an email account, go to a computer lab, or anywhere you have
access to the WorldWide Web, and go to http://www.hotmail.com
Set up an email account for yourself at Hotmail, and send me a
message, to my email address above.
Once you have sent me your email, then 2. ON THE WORLDWIDE WEB,
GO TO THE FOLLOWING URL:
http://netsquirrel.com/roadmap96/map05.html
This is a page from a 1996 Internet on-line course -- the
"Roadmap" course -- that gives a good introduction to Mailing Lists.
Please read it carefully. You may want to print it out. Once you have
done this, 3. GO TO: http://www.liszt.com
Browse this site carefully. Then, go to
http://www.tile.net
Click on the /lists link, which will take you to
www.tile.net/lists.
Browse this site carefully, too.
4. WRITE A 250-300 WORD ASSIGNMENT comparing Liszt.com with
Tile.net, as ways of locating mailing lists about different subject
areas. Specifically: pick one or two literature topics. Use both sites
to search for mailing lists on those topics. Report what you find.
5. E-MAIL your spell-checked essay to me.
My email address is on the syllabus, and on each web page for
this course. But here it is again: furrg@alpha.montclair.edu Be sure
to spell it correctly. Computers will not "guess" -- if my email
address is not perfectly spelled, your assignment won't get to me.
************************************************************************
HOW TO EMAIL ME (and everyone else in this course) 7 NO ATTACHMENTS.
Do not attach files and mail them. I don't want any computer viruses.
And downloading attached files is time-consuming. 7 COPY AND PASTE
your CORRECTED, EDITED ESSAY into the MESSAGE AREA of an email
message. Then, send it to me.
************************************************************************
Be sure I receive your email by Thursday, September 10, at 8 p.m.
NOTE: I will put this assignment on the Homework Page for our
course,
http://chss.montclair.edu/english/furr/wl/inthw98.html
Like all the other pages, this page is linked from our course
Home Page.
I will also email this assignment to everyone who has sent me
their email address. If you have done this already, check your email.
If you haven't, send me an email and I will send you the assignment.
My apologies for this situation. I'll see you all in class
Friday, Sept. 11.
Sincerely,
Grover Furr
