ENGL 250-02 The Internet for English Majors Mr Furr

Important Links for the Internet and Research

NOTE: The links on this page will not duplicate those on my Research and Documentation Page. That page is intended to be a "meta-resource" -- a page of annotated links to further resources for research.

The present page is the place we can put all useful links, with annotations, which we come across in the course of the semester, with helpful annotaitions to guide those who find this Page on the Internet.

This page will be a collective effort by all students as well as the instructor!

I. E-mail.

Free E-mail Address Directory. The three different kinds of free e-mail services are explained; categorized; and each site is provided with helpful annotations.

Yahoo's Email Meta-Index.

Yahoo's Free E-mail Index. Lots of entries, but without annotations.

II. Mailing Lists

Liszt, the Mailing List Directory.

Tile.net/lists -- The reference to Internet discussion lists. It only lists mailing lists that use the popular Listserv ® software. Liszt.com indexes lists which use other mailing list software, such as Majordomo, Listproc, and others.

CataList, the official catalog of LISTSERV® lists. You can usually find your mailing list here if it uses Listserv ® software. This page is maintained by L-Soft, which sells Listserv ® software.

III. The WorldWide Web

Yahoo's List of Free Web Space Providers -- the best place I know of to start looking. GeoCities is very popular; Brian recommends FreedomCity, with 20 MB of space. But there are lots of others -- a local one is Tripod.com.

IV. Web Effects -- CGI Scripts and Javascripts To Do Useful or Amusing Things.

Here's a page of short files I've made up which contain scripts you can easily copy, and then modify with your own URLs and text.

V. Final Papers for "The Internet for English Majors", Fall 1998 Class.

"Tolkien and the Wars", by Brian Kessler.

"Young Goodman Brown and the Mysteries Behind Theology", by Charlotte Blair
