MAILING LISTS -- AN INTRODUCTION

     Please use Tile.net;
Liszt.com, and
 Catalist to
find one mailing list relevant to your research paper topic.

     Copy down the subscription information from your source (the
easiest way of doing this is by 'copy-and-paste' into a simple word
processor, like NotePad or WordPad, but any word processor will do).

     Then, go to
RoadMap 96,
and read about the 'RoadMap 96' course. This is a great resource to
learn about Internet basics, even though it is two years old.

     Then, click on the link marked " the Roadmap96 syllabus", which
takes you to the list of pages for this course.

     Read (and, if you can, print out) the following files:

     	* MAP02 LISTSERV FILE SERVER COMMANDS
	* MAP05      LISTSERVS
	* MAP06      OTHER MAIL SERVERS

In MAP02, don't worry about the actual 'file server commands.' Just
read the basic subscription information at the beginning of the page.
Study the other pages carefully.

     Subscribe to the Mailing List you have chosen.

     FORWARD to me a copy of

	1. your subscription message
	2. any REPLY you get from the list
	3. the first message you get from the list.

     Be patient! You may sub to a list which no longer exists (this
happens). Or you may make an error in your command, in which case
you'll have to do it over.

     NOTE: IF YOU ARE EMAILING FROM 'ALPHA', you'll have to put some
'code' around all the Internet addresses. For example,

     	furrg@alpha.montclair.edu       -- Internet address

     	in%"furrg@alpha.montclair.edu" -- code required by Alpha
mailer (Pony Express for VMS). You 'package' the email address between
IN%" and " (caps or lower case doesn't matter in VMS -- but it does in
UNIX!).
