Chrétien de Troyes, Cligès, First Assignment

Reading Assignment: Read the folllowing texts:

• D.W. Robertson, Jr. "Chrétien's Cligès and the Ovidian Spierit", Comparative Literature 7, 1 (1955)
• Chrétien de Troyes, "Cligès", up to the end of line 2382.

You will have to study Robertson's excellent article by reading it carefully several times. I have underlined certain parts that I think are especially worthy of attention. But the whole article must be studied, and thought about.

Then read up to line 2382 of "Cligès." We will finish it for next class.

Writing Assignment: Pick TWO or THREE short passages in Part I of "Cligès" -- the part assigned for today -- that should, in your view, be read ironically. You may use Robertson's article, but only if you cite it properly.

Write at least 300 words. You may quote, but the quoted text does not count towards your 300 word minimum.
