Chrétien de Troyes, Erec and Enide, First Part

By "First Part" I mean up to the paragraph beginning "Vv. 2293-2764".

That means up to the end of p. 21 of this PDF'd edition. Please use this PDF'd edition so we all have the same page numbers!

Pages 22 -26 of this PDF'd edition are the notes. Be sure to consult them as well!

Read this part carefully, in the translation I have assigned you, the fine Everyman's Library translation by W.W. Comfort. It is very faithful to the original and also very readable.

As with so many Medieval works, there is a kind of unity in this first part alone.

It might almost be a completed work in itself. We will see that this to be true in Fitt 1 of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (SGGK) as well.

Study this first part carefully.

Written Assignment: Write 350 words or a little more identifying and interpreting the main medieval literary motifs which we've discussed.

Also, discuss -- if you can do it -- the structure of this first part.

If you do this, you'll be well on your way to an understanding of the work as a whole.
