Homework on "The Wanderer" and "The Seafarer" for Medieval English Literature

Read the introductory material on the Exeter Book Elegies, pp. 39-41 of our textbook.

Now read "The Wanderer, " pp. 41-43, and "The Seafarer," pp. 43-45, carefully, several times.

Please reread this page of short quotations from St. Augustine of Hippo's book On Christian Doctrine.

We'll go over all of it, not just paragraph 4. Please bring a copy of this page to class.

_____________

Assignment: To identify Christian elements in these poems.

Write at least 300 words, approximately 150 words on each, on the Christian elements in these two poems.

Use these Christian elements to interpret the poems in a non-literal manner -- i.e. assuming the poem is not really about literal "wandering" or a literal "voyage."

Remember what you read about the journey of life in the selection from St. Augustine, On Christian Doctrine.

Email to me, and to your group, in proper format.
