Read Section 9, "Portrait Against Background", pp. 67-94. These are the essays Hughes published as a result of his year spent in the Soviet Union during the early 1930s.
Study these essays carefully. Pick three themes which Hughes returns to several times. Write your 300 word essay on these three themes. Draw from at least five of the essays, but read them all. Be sure to use page numbers as references, so we'll all be able to find the passages easily. Email it to me and to your group.
