American Labor, 1880s to World War I

     Please read chapters three through six in Boyer and
Morais, Labor's Untold Story. 

     Then, please write 300 words on the following topic:

     The end of Reconstruction witnessed a successful attempt of the
old agricultural ruling class in the South, in alliance with the
industrial ruling class of the North, to keep poor white and black
farmers exploited and divided, through racism and force. 

     What was the fate of the Northern working class during the period
between 1877 and 1914? Give some examples of a similar attempt to
"divide and conquer" the Northern working class, during the same
period. Draw your examples from chapters 3-6 of Labor's Untold
Story.

     We are going to discuss this history in class, so please bring
both your HW assignment and the text itself to class with you.
