In 1999 I was able to audio tape Ben Chitty, a Navy Vietnam Vet and an activist in Vietnam Veterans Against the War, who came and talked to our class.
In 2001 I audio taped the talk of Vietnam Veteran, fellow member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and National President of Veterans for Peace, Dave Cline, talk about his experiences.
Please download one of these two talks from our FTP page. listen carefully to either Ben's or to Dave's talk.
Groups 1, 3, and 5 should listen to Dave's talk. Groups 2 and 4 - to Ben's talk.
Ben Chittt's talk is in 5 .RM files, "chittylessons1.rm" through "chittylessons5.rm". Dave Cline's talk is in 4 .RM files, "cline001.rm" to "cline004.rm"
You can play them with the free Real Player. This is the same program you used to listen to Ralph McGehee's talk a couple of months ago.
(If you don't have it -- you probably do have it on your computer, as it comes standard on many or most computers -- see the "Streaming Audio page linked on our Home Page.)
Then do the following assignment:
1. Summarize the main points of the talk in about 300 words or a little more.
2. In about 50-100 words, please summarize what you think are the main points that either Ben or Dave made. What was his view of the Vietnam War; what it means to him; what did he learn from it; how did it affect the rest of his life; etc.
Please make your posts/comments/replies thoughtful. But don't be afraid to disagree, even argue, and to engage "the big questions." Naturally, you can disagree with Ben Chitty, or Dave Cline, or me (Prof. Furr), as well as with each other. No 'orthodoxies' here! I intend to uphold 'freedom of discussion.'
Email to your group and to me. We'll discuss these in class.
