Assignment on Franklin, Vietnam & Other American Fantasies

Chapter 3: "The Antiwar Movement We Are Supposed To Forget"

Read this whole chapter, of course.

Pay special attention to pp. 50-54, concerning the very early antiwar movement of the '40s and '50s, the "memory" of which has been completely erased and which Franklin is rescuing in this chapter. Then, read over carefully what Franklin has to say about the most important part of the antiwar movement of the '60s and '70s -- the antiwar movement within the U.S. military, among American servicemen in uniform. This constitutes another movement of which the "memory" has been erased in contemporary history and media.

Write 350 words about these two antiwar movements. Why have they been almost completely "erased" from American history? Use specific examples, giving page numbers, but do not quote directly.

Remember -- only YOUR words, not the quotations, "count" towards the 350 words.
