The Theme of Religion in _God's Bits of Wood_

     Please reread the scenes in which the Imam appears (you have
mainly just finished looking at them, for the theme of
anti-communism). Now, consider the theme of "religion." It is less
prominent in GBW than in some other novels, but it is there.

     Please write 150 words or so -- a shorter assignment, then -- on
the theme of religion, paying attention to the following issues:

     * how does the Imam appeal to religion?

     * whose interests is the Imam serving?

     * what is the relationship between religion and fatalism, or
acceptance of the status quo?
