Fact Into Fiction: The Dakar-Niger Railway Strike

Print out and read the article "Fact and Fiction in God's Bits of Wood" , by James A. Jones of West Chester University (Pennsylvania). Prof. Jones is the English-speaking world's greatest authority on the history of this important strike.

In addition, Groups One and Two should print and study both of Jones' interviews with Cheikh Sidya Diombana, Secretary-General of the Retired Railway Workers Union in Bamako. Links to both interviews are in the bibliography of Jones' article.

Groups Three and Four should print and study Jones' personal interview with Sembene Ousmane himself.

Drawing upon all these materials: Jones' article, the interview or interviews you have read, and the novel itself, write 300 words on what you consider to be the main similarities and differences between the stroke as depicted in the novel, and the strike as described in the interview(s) you have read.
