The best course of action is to find a faculty mentor as early as possible, even before applying to the program, so that this person can guide you in your M.S. degree and funding opportunities. Very few Graduate Assistantships are available for M.S. students. There are two types of GA positions that provide tuition waivers and stipends: university funded and grant funded. Both positions are for full-time students pursuing research and teaching as part of their M.S degree.
o The university-funded GA positions are teaching positions and are allocated by the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies. To be considered for these positions, applicants need a strong academic background in undergraduate geology and environmental courses so that they can teach lab sections of any of the department's undergraduate courses. Only applicants that are fully matriculated and have a GPA higher than 3.0 are considered. These positions are typically allocated in July-August for each academic year.
o For the grant-funded GA positions, consult with your faculty mentor about open positions, or future opportunities for assistantships through grant funding. Alternatively, eligible students can work part-time outside MSU and part-time in the department as an hourly Graduate Student Worker. These hourly positions do not carry a tuition waiver, but also provide an opportunity to gain research experience and financial support.
