ASSIGMENT ON GI ANTIWAR MOVEMENT

1. Please read Heinl, "Collapse of the Armed Forces", and Kevin Buckley's review of David Cortwright's Soldiers in Revolt from The New York Review of Books, 1976.

Heinl, an Army historian, looks at the soldiers' discontent with the war from a military perspective. Discuss how he accounts for it.

How do Cortright, and Buckley, disagree?

Length: 150 words (about 15 lines).

2. Please read Smedley Butler, "America's Armed Forces In Time of Peace: The Army", published in 1935.

Butler was the Commandant of the Marine Corps in the 1920s, and the most decorated American soldier, with two CMHs.

Please print out these three articles and bring them to class with you.

NOTE: I know there are other versions of these documents on the web. Please use these PDF versions. That way, we all have the same page numbers!

Discuss how Butler has come to view US foreign intervention in the early part of the century, and any similarities with the Vietnam War as you see it.

Length: 150 words (about 15 lines).
