Historical Background of _Black Thunder_
Please reread Bontemps' Introduction to his novel. Please also
carefully read the section on the
historical 'Gabriel's Revolt' from Herbert Aptheker, _American Negro
Slave Revolts_.
Then, return to the novel and find examples of Bontemps' attempt
to be "historically accurate", or as close to the recoverable actual
history of the revolt and the time as he can. Write about them.
If you can find some points on which Bontemps _strayed_ from
historical accuracy, please note them as well. But, of course, I don't
mean details that Bontemps had to _invent_ -- he had to invent most of
the details, since the historical record is so scanty. Rather, I mean
places in which historical details exist, and Bontemps chose to ignore
them. Analyse _why_ you think he may have done this.
