Ptolemy - Cosmographia, ca. 1482 The ancient Greek astronomer Ptolemy considered the world to be round. Yet for centuries, there was a common belief that it was flat. Only toward the end of the Middle Ages in Europe was it increasingly obvious that Ptolemy was right, and explorers such as Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) set out with a clear understanding that it was no longer flat. Regrettably, New York Times columnist Tom Friedman uses the title "The Earth if Flat" for his book about interdependence in the global economy. He should have used "The Earth is Still Round."
