In some cultures ( i.e. Russian), males greet other males by kissing them on both sides of the face. A greeting such as this can get you into a lot of trouble in America for it can be considered insulting; especially when you're meeting someone for the first time. In America, individual personal space is very important and when breached, it can irritate and offend someone. A simple firm handshake with a "Nice to meet you" will definitely suffice.
