How are you doing?

 

When you get used to greeting people in America, you will notice that "How are you doing?" is asked frequently. You may at first find it quite interesting how people ask the question as they continue walking. You may even find them to be rude and insincere because they are not sticking around for the answer. That is because in America, the question "How are you doing?", when used as a greeting is pretty much rhetorical. In other words, we don't really want to know that you've had the "worst week ever". Instead of attempting to tell someone your personal problems (as it may be acceptable in your culture), you may want to consider just saying "I'm doing good. And you?".
